TSH, T4 and ultrasound — the minimum set for monitoring. An endocrinologist explains how to read the results and what not to fear.
Why the thyroid in particular
This small gland controls metabolism, heart rhythm, mood and weight. Its disorders are 5–8 times more common in women than in men and often hide behind “just tiredness”.
The minimum set once a year
- TSH — the main screening marker
- Free T4 — to clarify how the gland is working
- Ultrasound — volume, structure and nodules
- With nodules — antibodies and calcitonin as prescribed by the doctor
How to read the results
A slight deviation of TSH from the norm is not yet a diagnosis: the value changes with stress, lack of sleep and even the time of day. Take the test in the morning on an empty stomach and discuss the report with an endocrinologist. More than 90% of nodules found on ultrasound are benign and only need monitoring.
